Fragrance is, it can be said, timeless. Trends in fragrances come and go, and many scents have short shelf lives, but there are some that are handed down from generation to generation; come in and out of fashion as the years go by; stand the test of time thanks to their classic composition.
Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew is certainly one of those timeless scents, and it celebrates 60 years this year. It’s a mere baby compared to some classic fragrances from the big French beauty houses, but it is just as iconic – and was truly a first amongst American fragrance.
To celebrate Youth Dew’s 60th Anniversary and its enduring influence on women everywhere, in Spring 2013, Estée Lauder will introduce a NEW, Youth-Dew 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Bottle featuring a luxurious crystal encrusted, golden metalized bow for the perfect touch of elegance, and it will come in a gold box.
Like every great fragrance there is a fabulous story behind it. At the time of Youth Dew’s conception, in 1953, fragrance was only given to a woman as a gift, and reserved exclusively for special occasions. Bottles were displayed proudly, but would remain unopened and the fragrance would evaporate. Estee Lauder wanted to change this attitude, convince women they could buy fragrance for themselves, and use it lavishly, as we do today.
The development of Youth-Dew began with a scent that Mrs. Lauder’s mother kept in their home for years. a scent originally created by her uncle for a Russian princess! Estee purchased essences to rework the fragrance until it matched her vision, and after months of experimenting, she was not only thrilled with the outcome, but also discovered that Youth-Dew’s sweet, warm, diffusive scent, easily intermingled with flesh and water.
So, she positioned Youth Dew originally as a bath oil, which doubled as a perfume, and made it acceptable for women to buy it – bath oils were widely viewed as a personal product women would indulge in, like a lipstick.
“Creating a bath oil that could double as a perfume seemed a likely way to start American women on a guiltless journey to their own fragrance buying adventure,” said Estee Lauder.
Youth Dew is a warm Oriental fragrance, a top note of Bulgarian Rose and Jonquil with Lavender blossoms, Chamomile flowers and Bergamot. The heart is Jasmine and vibrant Muget interwoven with sensuous Ylang Ylang and Carnation notes. The background of the fragrance blends precious Patchouli, Vitiver and Sandalwood with velvety Mossy qualities. Incense, Amber and Musky notes make it a sensual scent.
