Where do you take your fashion inspiration from? Your friends, magazines, blogs, movie stars, and most probably television. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw character in Sex and the City has inspired millions of fashionistas all over the world, but she certainly wasn’t the first TV style icon.
This week saw the death of actor Richard Briers, most well-known for his role in the BBC 1970s sitcom, The Good Life, as Tom Good. (If you haven’t seen it, get over to YouTube now!). But perhaps the classic sitcom is most memorable to some for the outlandish dress sense, and amazing outfits of central character, Margot Leadbetter, played by Penelope Keith.
The wardrobe team had 1970s middle-class suburban housewife and busybody down to perfection with Margot, with her floating maxi dresses and kaftans, bold colours and prints, hats, turbans and statement pieces of jewellery. Her style epitomises an era, and it’s constantly copied and referenced today.
So, how do you get a bit of the Margot look? Easy – think long dresses, loose fits, wacky accessories, bold prints and mix up your colours, fabrics and textures. If it’s going to get you noticed, Margot would have worn it!
Team patterned 1970s style A-line skirts with colour block tops in different fabrics, and big chunky nude platform shoes.

For evening, try floaty jumpsuits, and glittery sandals. Margot loved hats, like this classic 1970s style floppy straw hat, and a feather bow-tie is perfect quirky finish to any outfit! And think Margot, think kaftans!
