Sometimes there’s a fashion trend that makes us shout ‘say what?!’ and other such disbelieving words. Socks and sandals is one of those. BUT…it’s actually brilliant.
Trust us. Socks and sandals is NOT a fashion faux pas. It’s been in and out of fashion for a few years now – the uber-cool have long-embaced it. Check out Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung in their socks and sandals combos over the years.
However, there are rules for this trend that you MUST obey. We are not advocating Birkenstocks with socks here. We’re not suggesting you grab the nearest white socks and a pair of good-old Jesus sandals and turn in to 1970s man, okay?
What we are suggesting is you wear socks and sandals together in an uber-cool fashion forward way. And here’s how.
Sandals must be chunky. Platforms, flatforms, block heels. No strappy sandals need apply, got it? If you’re wearing floral print or patterned sandals, then keep your socks simple – try complementary pastels or brights with your shoes. Little ruffles and trims add a cute Harajuku Girl style touch.

Contrast is key to this look – a pretty print deserves to be shown off, so keep your socks plain. This socks and sandals look works brillantly with shorts, and even more so with this season’s full midi skirts – it adds and edge to the look.
If your sandals are a plain colour, add a contrasting sock, or a bold, bright pattern if you’re brave enough! Or maybe a muted polka dot sock with a natural sandal is your style? Sheer socks can look fantastic with bright coloured sandals.
