Pastel Dresses for Oscar Style!

LUPITA NYONG’O was the Queen of the Oscars red carpet in her beautiful pastel blue Prada gown, the colour reminding her, she said, of the Nairobi sky.

Lupita nyongo oscars prada pastel dressesPastel dresses were few and far between on a bit of a dull red carpet in Hollywood on Sunday night, with stars favouring nudes and blacks, and deep navy blues.

But pastel dresses (and skirts, tops, shoes, bags, and the rest) are all over the high street.

So, you can try and emulate the Oscar-winning actresses style. Lupita won Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years A Slave, and collected it in her absolutely gorgeous, fairytale princess gown. The icy blue shade complemented her skintone perfectly. Pastel dresses  – in pink and blue primarily – are perfect for a summer wedding or party.

This Sadie maxi dress from Coast (at Debenhams, £175) has a pleated skirt and a lace bodice and is as near to Lupita’s stunning gown we can find.

A simple skater-style silhouette looks great in textured pale blue (£22.99, New Look), or a simple jersey mint green (£19, Dorothy Perkins @ BHS). But our favourite has to be the pastel blue and baby pink mix dress from French Connection (£140) – a lace bodice and a satin skirt make this dress quirkier than the rest.

A gorgeous pink maxi dress (£95, BHS) makes a big pastel statement, and a simple pink lace detail shift dress is a gorgeous look for summer (£60, Warehouse @ Debenhams). We love this icy blue shift dress with lace detail (£36, Warehouse @ Debenhams), and a baby pink halterneck for summer (£19.99, New Look) will look great on both darker and pale skintones. French Connection’s mint green draped dress (£85) with polka dot pattern is a gorgeous alternative to a straight pastel.

prom dresses – twelve dresses of christmas

It’s never too early to start thinking about your Christmas party dress. Sequin dresses, little black dresses, floating maxi gowns, ballgowns, lace prom dresses – they’re all already on the racks, just waiting to be snapped up for the biggest party night of your year.

So, in the last  few weeks, we’ve been sharing the Twelve Dresses of Christmas. We’ve had Little Black Dresses, Sequin Dresses, Maxi Dresses, and we end this week on Prom Dresses.

The prom dress might have a different meaning these days, but we are not talking about any style of dress for an end of year prom here – we’re talking about the original prom dresses.

First seen in the 1950s with those nipped in waists and full skirts, there is no dress more girly and cute than a prom dress. These days hemlines on them can fall higher than on the knee, and the absence of petticoats mean they don’t usually ‘stick out’ as much as original prom dresses. However, they are still magical and are absolutely perfect for the festive season.

There is no better time to wear prom dresses than on a glamorous night out. And don’t think you have to stick to black, or festive colours and sparkle. Florals and patterns look great in prom dresses.

Try a floral, or an on-trend tartan for a quirkier take on your prom party dress.

If you do want black for your Christmas party night, how about black with a jacquard pattern?

Lace looks great in prom dresses, over nudes or bold jewel colours. And it doesn’t have to be traditional lace – the circular pattern on this Jonathan Saunders Edition dress (middle) brings it right up to date.

Gorgeous deep jewel colours look great at Christmas – bold sapphire blues, and gorgeous deep bottle greens give a sophisticated look to a prom dress.
