Mini Midi Maxi – what dress length are you?

Mini midi maxi. Three dress lengths dominate fashion, with none of them standing out more than the other. Whilst the 60s had the mini, the 70s had the maxi, and the 50s had the midi, in the 2010s, anything goes.

So, are you mini midi or maxi?! We love all three, so we’ve rounded up 10 of the best in each length for you to choose from. We’re kind that way.

Lets start our mini midi maxi round-up with the shortest of hemlines – the mini. Really, a mini should be mid-thigh. But we reckon anything that sits above the knee is these days classed as a sort of mini. If it’s short, it’s mini. Choose your style and your mini length to suit your build, and the occasion. If you’ve got good legs, then flaunt them in the shortest of styles. Minis look fabulous in denim. They look great in simple styles. Shirt dresses work beautifully in this length.

The midi is the newest kid on the block in our fashion lives. Favoured in the 1940s and 1950s, it made a comeback in the 1980s, sort of hung around a bit in the 1990s, but really made a big impact on us when it appeared mid Noughties. It’s such an elegant length, but be careful with this if you are on the petite side – always wear heels. We love the midi in pencil shapes, and full skirts. We love it in prom dresses, and floaty beach dresses, and the hankie hem which has surfaced again this summer. It works in bold patterns, or simple florals. Denim looks fab in this length – team with wedges.

The maxi dress comes straight out of the 1970s. Floaty, comfortable, forgiving; in its most casual form it’s the perfect summer day dress. In more fitted shapes it’s the perfect evening gown. Make sure you have at least one maxi in your wardrobe at all times. If you’re on the shorter side, just make sure you have fabulous heels, and try to go for a waisted look rather than an empire which can just emphasise your, ahem, shortcomings.

We love lace in maxi dresses. We love chiffon, and floaty fabrics. Simple floral prints, and floaty, hippy styles. Stripes look fab in this length.
