Marsala Pantone Colour of the Year

Yep, it’s that time again – Pantone Colour of the Year time. Why is there a colour of year? Er, not entirely sure on that one, but this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year is marsala.

marsala pantone color of yearIsn’t that that Italian fortified wine that you cook with, I hear some of you cry (me included). Well, yes, yes it is. Marsala is a very lovely drink as well. And so yeah, no prizes for guessing that the colour is, well, like wine.

Marsala Pantone 18-1438 – to give it it’s full name – is ‘a naturally robust and earthy wine red – Marsala enriches our minds, bodies and souls.’

High expectations for a colour, don’t you think? It may not enrich our mind, body or soul, but it is well, rather nice. Very subtle, warming, and inoffensive.

True marsala is not as deep as what we know as wine, and burgundy, but think of those and you are on the right track.

It works beautifully with reds, and French Connection’s lovely collarless coat captures tones beautifully. A hint of marsala in shoes is a great way into this particular shade.

Come the spring and summer, marsala is a great base shade for floral patterns, or a great trim on white.

Marsala is an unusual colour, but if you think of wine and burgundy, and go a bit lighter, you’re on the right track!
