Oscar night style

It’s the Oscars on Sunday night – or the 85th Annual Academy Awards to give them their full name. It’s the best red carpet of the year at the biggest awards ceremony. Oscar dresses are remembered long after the event, be they good or bad.

Julia Roberts’ beautiful vintage monochrome Valentino gown has gone down in fashion history as one of the most successful Oscar dresses – she looked stunning when she picked up her Best Actress award for Erin Brockovich wearing this dress in 2001.

If you like things classic, and simple like Julia, then perhaps a Pierce II Fionda black and white dress (£195) would suit your big event look? Or maybe a simple gown in a simple navy from Coast at Debenhams (£170) is more your thing?

Pretty pastels should look good on the red carpet, but Gwyneth Paltrow’s ill-fitting pink Ralph Lauren gown in 1999 which she wore to collect her Best Actress award for Shakespeare in Love, is remembered to this day for all the wrong reasons.

Keep it unfussy in pastels in this simple Debut strapless dress (£140), or this pale pink crystal detail dress from Quiz at Debenhams (£55.99).

Pretty&PastelPerhaps making a bold statement is more of your thing, with something a little bit more quirky and out there – but maybe not as out there as Bjork’s infamous ‘swan dress’ at the 2001 Academy Awards!

This Julien MacDonald Star bold tie-dye gown (£75) with halterneck detail will get you noticed, as will the bright digital patterned Butterfly by Matthew Williamson dress (£85), with a sequin neck detail.

quirky&loudBright and bold colours looks great on the red carpet – thought they’re not everyone’s cup of tea – and is red itself a good choice?

It was for Kate Winslet in 2002, when she wore a beautiful bright red Ben de Lisi gown. Michelle Williams’s bright yellow Vera Wang dress in 2006 divided opinions, but it certainly caught the eye!

That’s exactly what you would do in this stunning blue and black Ossie Clark halterneck dress (£149) or this beautiful canary yellow embellished Butterfly by Matthew Williamson number (£120).

brightandboldWhatever your event, red carpet or not, one of these dresses is bound to make the right statement, whatever you want that to be! All the dresses featured are from Debenhams.
