St Patrick’s Day Fashion Moment

It’s St Patrick’s Day today, so, may the luck of the Irish be with us all, and it’s a great excuse to take a look at some lovely green clothes, with a St Patrick’s Day fashion moment!

What on earth, I hear you cry? St Patrick’s Day fashion? Fret not, I don’t expect you all to be popping on leprechaun outifits and growing ginger beards – and we certainly don’t expect any Irish people to be doing that today or any other day. Well, maybe the beard, or for fancy dress, but well, anyway, you get our point.

St Patrick’s Day fashion is purely about gorgeous, wearable, green. Mint, lime, olive, emerald, and more, there are loads of lovely ways to wear green.

If you’re heading out for a pint of Guinness this St Patrick’s Day, you may want to have a wee St Patrick’s Day fashion moment of your own.

If you want to be traditional, stick to bold, bright, emerald green, like the green in the Republic of Ireland flag. Mix it up with a white pattern or print, or add layers of lime.

Wear just a nod to green in a pattern or a pair of bold green killer shoes, or go all out in the boldest green trousers you can find.

if bold, bright, lime or emerald greens are too much, then perhaps pastel mints or pale olives are more to your St Patrick’s Day fashion taste?

Mix it up with patterns, monochrome, dots, or texture, and, again, if you aren’t loving green head to toe, then a simple accessory is enough.

The green trend

I’m calling this the green trend. Like an artist defines times of his work by periods, so fashion is defined by trends. Some trends happen almost perennially and others just pop up unexpectedly.

And so this year we have the green trend. Not emerald green, not lime green, not pastel green, but a sort of deep forest green. The darkest bottle green.

And isn’t it sophisticated? It reminds me of gentry, aristrocracy, the country set. Sumptous, rich, autumnal, wintry, festive, chic – this shade of green has it all.

It looks great on a coat – a bold, colurful satement for the winter months. But I think I love it most of all in sequins – on trousers, skirts or dresses, it works beautifully.

This deep green works so well with navy, particularly in a tartan or plaid. The darkest forest or bottle green can look almost black, but that’s the twist!

Accents of green in jewels look great. If you really feel this deep, forest green is too dark, lift it with pattern, or opt for a metallic version, or a lighter shade.

Because, as well as these deep forest greens, this green trend is moving into lighter, paler greens – how gorgeous is this coat from French Connection? And the leopard moth print ponyskin coat is a bold and bright way to incorporate green into your wardrobe – and make an entrance!
