Gladiators – Weekly Wishlist

Gladiators. Gladiator sandals. Who doesn’t have a pair? They’re one of those fashion trends that appeared, and, well, just never left again. It’s not a case of them outstaying their fashion welcome, though, oh no.

Gladiators have become a fashion staple because they should be. They’re stylish, comfortable, easy to wear, and have evolved over the years. There are knee-high gladiators, metallic gladiators, coloured gladiators…you get the idea.

Those Romans and Ancient Greeks knew what they were doing. Okay, we’re not suggesting the modern day gladiator sandals are exact replicas of those the fighters wore inthe arenas in ancient times, but if they’re goof enough for Russell Crowe…

So, gladiators are our weekly wishlist choice this week – all shapes and sizes of them!

The Roman gladiators really did wear their sandals up their legs – to protect their shins, so, if you fancy aping them, try a pair of knee high glads, like the aptly names Spartacus (£65) from Schuh. These fringed beauties come in tan and black.

Perhaps fighting would have been difficult in New Look’s tan knee high high-heeled take on the look (£39.99), but their studded black version (£39.99) is a sandal with attitude!

If you still want a heel, but not the knee-high part, how about Dorothy Perkins’ stylish brown gladiator sandals (£23.20, BHS)? But back on flat ground, Evans’ black wide-fit glads (£28, BHS) are pretty much perfect – and no toe-post, if that’s not your thing.

Gladiators look great in metallic leathers, or with embellishment. Schuh’s bronze lace up version (£45) are a fab summer sandal, and New Look’s embellished take on them (£39.99) will add sparkle to any summer day.  And GAP’s simple thin leather take (£24.95) on the classic gladiator in silver are perfect holiday sandals.

If you prefer a more classic sandal, then H&M’s white version are for you (£19.99) Okay, they’re not overly gladiator-like, but they’re cute and comfy.

White Stuff’s grey leather sandals (£39.95) and French Connection’s black leather sandals (£80) aren’t classics either, but are perfect if you don’t want your gladiators to look, well, too like gladiators!

Finally, if it’s a pop of colour your are after from your gladiators, then go for BHS’s coral pair (£31.50) – not traditional again, but perfectly summery!
