Fashion with a Conscience

We don’t just want great fashion these days – many of us want to know where it came from, how it was made, and who or what was harmed in the process. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have long had a link with the fashion world, and now, every year, they will award high street stores and designers who have the best animal-free fashion.

You can buy some of the award winning pieces from brands in Ocean Terminal, doing your bit for animal-free fashion, and enjoying some retail therapy, guilt-free!

PETA – with the help of judges Sadie Frost and Meg Mathews – have launched the  first-ever PETA-Approved Vegan Fashion Awards.

The awards mark the launch of PETA’s new logo, which designers and retailers can use to identify vegan clothes and accessories that they sell online or in stores.

The winners include Vivienne Westwood for Most Stylish Handbag, and Stella McCartney for Most Stylish Women’s Shoes, as well as the following winners, all available in Ocean Terminal

Most Stylish Men’s Shoes – H&M Imitation Suede Boots, £29.99 – style and no animals harmed in the process with these super desert boots, made from synthetic fabrics.

Most Stylish Purse – Floozie by Frost French Zip Around Purse, £25, Debenhams – mmm, did judge Sadie pick her own brand?! Lovely patent leather-look purse in pretty pink

Most Stylish Men’s Outerwear – Burton Pea Coat, £60 – polyester, viscose and elastane do a fine job instead of wool, and it’s machine washable!

Most Stylish Women’s Knitwear – TopShop Jumper, £34 – a great nod to the neon trend – and it’s free from wool, silk and other products PETA deem ‘products of cruelty’.

Most Stylish Women’s Outerwear – New Look Pleather Jacket, £34.99 – washable in your machine, super-cool, imitation leather is purse-friendly as well as animal-friendly.

My two greatest passions are fashion and helping animals, so I was thrilled when PETA asked me to help judge their fashion awards“, says Frost, the founder of popular fashion and lingerie line Frost French, stocked in Debenhams.

It’s phenomenal how many retailers and top designers are using pleather, micro-suede and faux cashmere in their collections, and the quality is amazing. The new fabrics are kinder not only to animals but also to the environment. So with ethical consumerism on the rise – and its increasing importance to young people – retailers need to respond by using compassionately produced materials if they don’t want to be left behind.
