Flares Five Ways

Flares! Have you got your flares yet? Are you embracing the return of this jeans shape, or still struggling to slip out of your skinnies?

If that’s the case – and we think it will be with a lot of us – then here’s a handy little guide to how to do flares five ways – five fabulous ways to wear the only cut of jean you should be wearing this season.

First up, before flares five ways, let’s look at the flares. There are two styles of flares around this season – kick flares, and wide leg flares. Kick flares are like a more extreme version of that old classic, the bootcut, and more like the classic 1970s bell-bottomed flare. But MUCH better! Wide legs are wider all the way down, rather than the flared part kicking out from the knee, and are super comfortable.

Who doesn’t love the nautical trend? Who doesn’t love a striped top? Pairing the nautical trend with flares makes sense, no? After all, sailors love a flared trousers. So, in the first of our flares five ways, it’s nautical and nice, and so easy to do. Just grab a striped top (£35, White Stuff), and accessories in red white and blue – this fab bag is Floozie by Frost French @ Debenhams (£20), and the bold red wedges are £19.99 at H&M.

If you’re going to San Francisco …. yep, we know, wear flowers in your hair, yeah, yeah. So, maybe add a floral crown (£3.99, New Look) to this look -the classic 1970s way to wear flares this season. French Connection’s gorgeous 1970s smock top is just the perfect match for flares. Add a fab pair of wooden platforms (£50, Schuh) and a cute fringed H&M bag (£7.99), and you are ready for Woodstock. Perhaps.

Another 1970s trend was disco – but that was more tight pants and boob tubes, right enough… BUT! It doesn’t mean you can’t go clubbing in your flares. Keep those wedges high, but with a silver sparkle like these from New Look (£19.99). Add a cute sequinned top from French Connection (£110) and carry a metallic clutch (£25, Edition by Todd Lynn @ Debenhams) and you’re good to go.

Jeans are great dressed up, but ever better dressed down. And how about indulging in a little fashion irony with this fab Tee from French Connection (£38). Not a fashion victim? Off to lunch for work or fun, flares five ways final way is super-stylish. Add a long-line jacket – we adore H&M’s reversible kimono style (£49.99). Keep it simple with a vest top, also at H&M for just 3.99, in a summery turquoise  shade, and a contrasting mint shopper bag from BHS (£25) and some lace up on-trend clog sandals (£55, Schuh), for a super sharp look.
