The Apprentice is back on BBC1 tonight, at 9pm. Lord Sugar, Nick and Karren will be putting a new set of candidates through their paces and tearing them apart in the boardroom.
We’re guaranteed some really annoying candidates, the girls team fighting and talking over each other, and some really ropey boardroom fashion.
What to wear to work must be one of those daily conundrums for some – is it smart enough, is it too much, is it too dressed down, and it’s nowhere near Dress Down Friday? But it really shouldn’t be that much of a hassle. Just follow a few simple guidelines – and break a few rules – and you’re sure to be boardroom-ready every working day.
Don’t join the dozens of navy-blue clad workers that traipse in and out of the office blocks, and to and from the stations in your city. Add a bit of colour to your summer work wardrobe with some carefully chosen pastels. This gorgeous lime dress from Dorothy Perkins (£30) is the perfect pop of pastel colour – a black jacket and shoes will keep it businesslike.
If you can push the boundaries a bit, then this lovely Jacquard pencil skirt (£40) and lace front cardigan (£26, both Dorothy Perkins) in pale pink is a lovely, fresh summer work combo. And ditch your dull navy or black bag for summer-fresh neutral number, like this big tote, £34.99, from New Look.
A simple suit is perfect office attire, but it doesn’t have to be dull, or manly. And please – np boot cut trousers! They are so 1995! Invest in a simple suit, with a simple shape. Top Shop’s preppy fleck blazer (£100) and trousers (£50) look great with a simple white shirt, and a fantastic snakeprint satchel (£34).
And this lovely J by Jasper Conran check suit at Debenhams, pictured right, (jacket £56, trousers, £42) is modern, stylish and somewhat serious! The red flat pumps (£50) add a splash of colour.
Warehouse (at Debenhams) have some excellent ,simple tailoring – choose from a pencil skirt (£45), or tapered trousers (£48) to match your blazer (£80), or buy both and mix it up. Add this beautiful leather snakeskin bag (£39.99) from H&M for a bold splash of colour, or this cool white satchel (£28) from Top Shop for a bit of fun.
The Monochrome trend is huge this summer, and it’s a simple and stylish look for work, This patterned dress (£29.99), black jacket (£29.99) and simple court shoes (£29.99), all from H&M, make a stylish and smart outfit we’re sure would even impress Lord Sugar!
It’s summer, and city shorts can look business-like – but be careful; they won’t cut the mustard in some offices, we are sure! Try a shorts suit, like this one (jacket £29.99, shorts (£14.99) from H&M.
And if you can get away with pushing the workwear boundaries a bit, then try some pastel shorts (£32) from Wallis, a cute tie-detail blouse (£19.99) from New Look, and a big statement bag like this striped one (£30) from Warehouse (at Debenhams). Add these lovely Principles by Be De Lisi shoes (£35) at Debenhams for the finishing touch.
So, banish those navy suits, cut out the boot-cut trousers, add a splash of colour here and there, and excel in the boardroom fashion stakes at least!
The Apprentice starts tonight on BBC1, 9pm and continues tomorrow and next week.
