Alternative Denim

Denim doesn’t just mean jeans. This season in particular, alternative denim choices are everywhere. Trust us, you will love this new take on an age-old style. Alternative denim means two things – alternative denim fabrics, and alternative styles.

So, from lightweight denim-a-likes, to denim shoes, there is something in this trend for everyone. And no jeans here!

Instead of jeans, try a denim dress. There are so many styles available, and so many different types of denim fabric, some with added stretch, some with a jersey feel, and others that are more traditional. Denim shift or shirt dresses in dark fabrics are even work-friendly for some, right?

Denim in trouser-form needn’t mean jeans. A big trouser shape for this season is the culotte – but longer, and not quite as wide as some culottes. New Look’s denim culottes (£24.99) have a faded, tiered hem, which we love, and are perfect, as styled here with a simple white top. Or maybe their blue culotte style trousers (£22.99), which look like denim, right? New Look’s pale pinstripe high waisted denim hotpants (£17.99) are 1970s-tastic, agreed? If you have the legs for them, get them on! Finally, we love GAP’s loose, slouchy, denim dungarees (£54.95).

Alternative denim bottomsDenim in top form is probably the one look in alternative denim that can be difficult to wear. Do we do double-denim?If not, what do you wear your denim top with? Faux leather we say! And yes, yes, yes, this year to double, and even triple, denim!

Replace a regular denim jacket with something a bit more tailored (and not strictly denim!). White Stuff’s blue collarless jacket (£75) has a denim feel, New Look’s kimono wrap style jacket (£22.99) would look great with dark denim culottes, and H&M’s stonewash and darkwash trim jacket (£34.99) is an quirky take on the regular.

alternative denim jacketsFor summer, your alternative denim wardrobe needs to include a dungaree pinafore dress (£44.95, GAP), okay? Or a really pale, gorgeous denim strappy dress like this one from New Look (£27.99).

alternative denim pinaforesDenim skirts can be 1970s or 1980s inspired. If it’s the 1970s look you are after, then go for A-line, maxi or midi. If it’s the 1980s you are channelling, then try a pencil skirt.

Finally, be a little quirky with your alternative denim style, and get some denim on your feet! We LOVE these denim Kickers, to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary. (£85, Schuh).

Dungarees – Weekly Wishlist

Yes, dungarees. That’s our weekly wishlist today. We love these versatile overalls, as the Americans like to call them. Take step back to the 1940s (when women wore them in the factories), or the 1970s, when they really came into their own, and embrace a different denim item in your wardrobe. Short or long, dark or light, there’s a denim dungaree style for everyone – and yes, maternity dungarees are on the list!

Comfortable and easy to wear, MAMA’s mum-to-be dungarees in soft black denim at H&M (£29.99) are a stylish look for you and your bump. New Look’s black dungarees with ripped knees (£26.99) will look perfect with a simple white Tee. GAP’s knee-length short dungarees (£22.99, were £39.95) look great with short wellies for perfect festival style.

If you want to go shorter, then try Quiz @ Debenhams acid light blue pair (£15.99, were £26.99) or New Look’s pale blue ripped pair (£24.99), or their dark blue short style (£26.99). These dark blue dungarees shorts will take you into winter. Add a roll-neck and tights for super 70s style.

H&M’s cream lace dungarees (£29.99) are definitely a style statement  – are you brave enough? French Connection’s white dungarees (£60, were £85) will see you out of summer and into autumn.

New Look’s deep denim blue dungarees (£26.99) are a simple style statement to add to your wardrobe this winter. Or maybe GAP’s 1969 cross-over back denim overalls (£54.95) are a better fit?

What’s your dungarees style?
