We love T-shirts

Let’s talk about T-shirts. Hands up who doesn’t own a T-shirt? Do we believe you, you there at the back? No. Everyone must own at least one T-shirt, one of the easiest garments to wear.

T-shirts, date back to around 1913 when the US Navy began issuing them as undergarments, and the word T-shirt entered the American dictionary in the 1920s.

Marlon Brando wore a classic white T-shirt, or Tee, in A Streetcar Named Desire in the 1950s, James Dean followed suit, and that was it. Those undergarments were now classic outer garments.

Is there anything more classic than a clean white T-shirt and a pair of jeans? But that white T-shirt was always a canvas waiting for art to happen on it. Slogans, images, advertising – anything can be said on a T-shirt.

In the 1980s, designer Katherine Hamnett pioneered oversize T-shirts, with slogans on them. T-shirts are the perfect way of expressing yourself, your beliefs, your politics, or just having a bit fun.

If you want a new T-shirt, then have a look in the Ocean Terminal Limited Edition store. A few of the designers involved in the collaborative pop-up shop with Scotland Re:Designed, specialise in the simplest, but at times most effective piece of clothing we know – the T-shirt.

We asked Edinburgh based brand Abetwix’s Steph Kelly about her T-shirt designs, and the process involved.

“It always starts with research, if I get an idea in my head I will try to get as much inspiration as possible. Then it is all about the drawing and experimenting with different textures and techniques,” says Steph. “I will then look at refining ideas and seeing how the illustrations and artwork would appear on the garments, although I do often have silhouettes in my head in the earlier stages. Sometimes it works as you would hope, sometimes it doesn’t, and you go back to the drawing board!”
