Retro Hogmanay style

Here’s a thought for you – bring in the new year in retro Hogmanay style! For the night we look to the future, step back in time, fashion-wise, and rock a decade gone by!

For our retro Hogmanay style guide we’ve picked four fab fashion decades – the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Lets start our retro Hogmanay style guide back in the 1950s. The decade of wiggle dresses, full skirts, bobbysox, headbands and cutesy cardigans. We’ve chosen an outfit that gives you that retro Hogmanany style, but with a modern, wearable twist. You don’t want to look like an extra from Grease, okay?

Hogmanay retro hogmanay style 50sTeam a gorgeous wide flared skirt (perfect for dancing, £49.99, H&M) with a beautiful 1950s style shell top. This beaded top from H&M (£99.99) is luxurious and will see you through the decades! Add simple pumps (£17.99, New Look) in a metallic shade for a bit of seasonal sparkle, and a vintage style clutch bag (£30, Jenny Packham @ Debenhams), and top the outfit off with a beautiful pale wool coat (£150, Rocha.John Rocha @ Debenhams) any Hollywood movie star of the 1950s would have loved.

Moving into the 1960s for our retro Hogmanay style, means one thing for us – bright psychedelic prints. There are many looks to 1960s style – from beatnik to hippy, to Mad Men style, but we’ve gone for a simple Mod-inspired look.

retro hogmanay style 1960sA psychedelic print shift dress (£35, Red Herring @ Debenhams) in a simple shape screams 1960s to us. Team with white accessories – they just loved their white in the 1960s. A simple pair of white courts (£14.99, Schuh), and a white bag (£14.99, H&M) are perfectly matched. Add a black coloured funnel-neck straight wool coat (£125, JOY) for the ultimate 1960s vibe.

The 1970s retro Hogmanay style guide does not include afro wigs, The Village people outfits and yellow flares, okay? Just, no. The 1970s were a stylish time, contrary to popular belief.

retro hogmanay style 70sWe’ve chosen to focus on the more chilled out hippy vibe for our 1970s retro Hogmanay style, with a gorgeous floaty maxi dress (£250, French Connection), a white fake fur coat (£34.99, H&M) and simple accessories. Platform shoes are a must (£29.99, Schuh) and a fringed bag (£24.99,H&M) rounds this decade’s outfit off nicely.

Finally, 1980s retro Hogmanay style. The 1980s embraced the jumpsuit with all its might. Party like it’s 1984 in a fantastic fringed, low back jumpsuit from H&M (£34.99), and add a bit of 1980s bright with this great duster coat (£34.99) from New Look.

retro style hogmanay retro style 80sAn iridescent cross-body bag (£15.99, New Look) is retro-cool, and strappy sandals (£50, Schuh) are 1980s-tastic, in a seasonal silver of course. Finally, sweep that hair into a side ponytail and wear just one solitary feather drop earring (£10 (for the pair), Floozie by FrostFrench @ Debenhams).

Have a Happy New Year in retro Hogmanay style, folks!

Cagney and Lacey Style!

I LOVE Cagney and Lacey. And Cagney and Lacey style!

For those of you not familiar, they were a pair of female NYPD detectives, operating out of the 14th Precinct, and on our TV screens, in the 1980s to the early 1990s. They’re currently showing re-runs on BBC2 in the afternoons (3pm weekdays, if you’re interested), and I’m hooked all over again.

Cagney & Lacey get the bad guys...

Cagney & Lacey get the bad guys…

But mainly for the fashion, not that the show isn’t great. But as I’ve been watching the repeats, I’ve noticed how autumn winter 2014 the Cagney and Lacey style is! Forget the legwarmers and shellsuits version of the 1980s, this is style from that decade that has stood the test of time, and we’re all embracing again.

Early 1980s fashions still had a hint of the 1970s about them, and Cagney and Lacey style in the early days reminds me of Ali McGraw in Love Story. There’s another one to Google if you don’t know it!

cagney & lacey style 8Think full midi-skirts, plaid, chunky knits, fine knits, hats, gloves, knee high boots and slouchy leather bags.

Cagney and Lacey style was all about style and comfort. Pockets in skirts for payphone change, slouchy bags big enough to carry all female cop essentials – lipstick, ID card, gun! Big wrap coats to keep out the winter chill (New York winters are COLD!), boots with a small heel, but not too high – they had to run in them, remember. Puff sleeve or pussybow blouses, thin leather belts. You get the idea.

Christine Cagney – played by Sharon Gless – was the single, hard-talking blonde, whose favourite colour was red, and who probably had the better wardrobe.

But Tyne Daly’s Mary-Beth Lacey – mother of two (later three), wife to Harvey, and softer than her partner – had some excellent outfits.

And, Cagney and Lacey style is easy to achieve at the moment. The shops are full of midi-length skirts. It’s winter – the perfect time for wraps coats or raincoats, knee high boots and chunky knits, no?

Bold red is on trend this winter, as is plaid – or tartan. Christine Cagney would be loving this look! She clashed her reds – true Cagney and Lacey style gurus would do the same!

Softer pastels and pinks look great with grey – a fab winter alternative to black. Cagney and Lacey style showcased a lot of jumpers, Christine loved a cowl neck. Be more 2014 with a roll neck or a turtle neck.
