Denim. Denim days. Denim nights. Denim all the time. But not just jeans, okay? This is the mantra for the coming season, fashion fans, because denim will play a huge part in our wardrobes.
And when it is jeans, you better get used to a new shape – the flare. Yeah, we know, it’s not new, but how long has it been since we embraced anything other than an 80s-inspired skinny? Boot-cut? Er, no thanks. Flare? Er, yes, please.
The 1970s are back, and your denim days will be filled with all sorts of flared jeans. From wide all over, to kick flares, to bell bottoms, you will not be able to see your shoes (which must be platforms, of course).
So, let’s start our little look at your denim days look with those flared jeans. On the left, lovely deep blue denim button front high waisted flare from H&M (£24.99), and on the right French Connection’s dark blue denim ‘Belle’ bottoms (£80)
Choose your flared jeans in any style, any colour, as long as they are flared! On the left, New Look’s washed out, high-waisted ripped bell bottom flares (£24.99) are a real statement, and will mix perfectly with a smock top, a furry gilet and a floppy hat.
In the middle, New Look’s black denim flares (£24.99), a perfect way to turn denim days into denim nights. Team with a lurex knit, or a silky, nlack 70s bag, some fringing – on a bag, or a jacket – and you’ve got 1970s denim nights sorted!
On the right, H&M’s palest denim wide leg flares – comfortable, slouchy, perfect for the end of summer, and long denim days, with a crochet vest top, a floppy sunhat, and some platform sandals. Perfect hippie style!
Red Herring @ Debenhams have more structured flares, with a big belt included (£30), and New Look have gorgeous mid-blue denim wide leg style (£24.99) that are gently loose and flared all the way down the leg – making them uber flattering. And if you fancy something a bit different, and completely 1970s, the try New Look’s denim culottes (£24.99).
When you’re not in flares, spend your denim days in skirts. Again, it’s that 1970s vibe – you choose the length, just make sure the style is A-line. JOY’s Valley of the Dolls A-line maxi skirt is a great late summer into autumn denim buy. H! by Henry Holland @ Debenhams has this lovely dark denim A-line mini – team with knee high tan boots and a roll neck from 1970s style points.
New Look’s denim midi skirt (£22.99) is a wardrobe staple for the coming season, and if A-line really isn’t for you, then try H&M’s pocket front dark stretch denim straight skirt (£19.99).
Dungarees are here again – this trend is determined to hang around. New Look’s dungarees full length style (£26.99) are a classic. Perfect for the1970s trend, and an alternative to the now ubiquitous jumpsuit.
Or maybe the darker denim shorts style dungarees instead of a playsuit are a winter alternative? Add a blouse or a sweater, thick tights and boots. And we love H&M’s pinstripe denim casual shorts (£7.49, were £14.99) to take you from long summer nights with your pins out, to late winter denim days, with thick opaque tights.
H&M’s stretchy jersey bodycon dress (£14.99) isn’t actually denim, but it looks like it, and we like it! Add a contrasting denim shade in a handbag (£15.99, New Look) for a fab double denim look.
If we buy one piece for denim days this season, it’s going to be a denim shirt dress, This one from Principles @ Debenhams is perfect (£40). We also love this acid denim backpack as an alternative handbag for late summer/early autumn (£19.99).
Mix up your denims. Wear double or even triple denim. Have denim days filled with lovely denim. Try a denim top with your skirt like this fray hem top from New Look (£17.99), or mix up a dark denim shirt (£17.99, New Look) with a vintage style classic denim jacket (£30, BHS).
Of course, if you are a looking for all your denim in once place, then head to GAP! Gorgeous pale denim shirt (£34.95), brilliantly easy denim shirt dress (£44.95)
We love their relaxed vintage style flares (£44.95) and their deep dark blue/black denim dungarees (or overalls, as GAP call them, £54.95) have a loose crossover at the back, and look perfect with a white shirt.
GAP’s 1970s inspired denim skirt (£34.95) has a cute split up the front to show off those boots you must wear with it.
Happy denim days!
