Fashion is having a Private Benjamin moment this autumn winter – khaki style. Who, I hear all the under 35s cry. Goldie Hawn (that’s Kate Hudson’s mum) in one of her most famous roles. Basically a woman. In the army. Yep. Well, it did come out in 1980…
Anyway, khaki style is it this autumn, but we don’t really mean army gear, or camouflage. Mainly the colour khaki, with a few army-esque influences here and there. Think epaulettes, cargo pants, and the like.
Mainly it’s about the colour, and one khaki style item you probably want to get yourself is a parka. A nod to the Mod 1960s trend around, and a throwback to the late 1990s, when parkas had another fashion ‘moment’, this is the outerwear of choice for early winter. The pink fur, like on this Henry Holland one, is optional…
Clockwise, from top left: Khaki shirt, £22.99, New Look, cargo trousers, £29.99, lace trimmed tunic, £12.99, both H&M, ankle boots, £78, Red or Dead @ Schuh, pink fur-trimmed parka, £89, H! by Henry Holland @ Debenhams
Jumpsuits have that great military feel to them, and have been on trend now for what seems like at least a few years. There is no let up this winter, so get used to them. If khaki style doesn’t do it for you, a simple t-shirt or bag is a wee nod to the trend you might get on board with, no?
There are all sorts of shades of khaki, from true army green, to olives, deeper tones, and lighter hues. Mix and match your khaki tones if you dare!
My favourite item is this simple New Look shirt dress. Team with the above Adidas Gazelles and a parka for a true mod-like, khaki style, military-ish look, Private Benjamin would be proud of.
