Balmain x H&M

Fashion fans, you will already know that the Balmain x H&M collection lands in select stores, and online, this week – November 5 to be precise. But what’s all the fuss?

Who is this Olivier Rousteing who wants us to use the hashtag #HMBalmaination when the collection is sold out (which will proabbly be an hour afterit goes on sale, if the hype is anything to go by).

Here’s a few fun facts about Balmain x H&M, and a little look at some of the pieces available.

But first, the campaign video, starring a dancing Kendall Jenner…yip, shy gal Jenner is doing an old-school video-game style dance, in a beaded jacket (£299.99) from the collection, on the New York subway. It’s kind of fun, actually!

What is Balmain?

Balmain was founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945. He was highly influenced by Christian Dior and his ‘new look’  that celebrated the end of wartime austerity. At that time, Balmain was considered one of the kings of French fashion . He ressed the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Ava Gardner.

When he died in 1982 his label seemed to slip into legend – it was highly though of by other designers, but it just ambled along, not very newsworthy, and not at the cutting edge of modern day fashion.  Until, that is, a relatively unknown designer called Olivier Rousteing took the reins in 2011, aged just 25…

What’s the Balmain style?

Balmain is famous for its super-womanly silhouettes – think shoulder pads, and cinched in waists –  and lots and lots of rich embellishment. Olivier has added a fierce twist for a modern generation.

Who is Olivier Rousteing?

He’s a 29-year-old orphan from Bordeaux, who has queued in line with the rest of us for H&M designer collaborations in the past. His is the 18th the Swedish chain have done.

He’s friends with Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, who love his work, and all the supermodels want to work for him. Check out this campaign shot with Gigi Hadid, Jourdan Dun, Kendall, and two Olivier male model lookalikes!
