Alternative Denim

Denim doesn’t just mean jeans. This season in particular, alternative denim choices are everywhere. Trust us, you will love this new take on an age-old style. Alternative denim means two things – alternative denim fabrics, and alternative styles.

So, from lightweight denim-a-likes, to denim shoes, there is something in this trend for everyone. And no jeans here!

Instead of jeans, try a denim dress. There are so many styles available, and so many different types of denim fabric, some with added stretch, some with a jersey feel, and others that are more traditional. Denim shift or shirt dresses in dark fabrics are even work-friendly for some, right?

Denim in trouser-form needn’t mean jeans. A big trouser shape for this season is the culotte – but longer, and not quite as wide as some culottes. New Look’s denim culottes (£24.99) have a faded, tiered hem, which we love, and are perfect, as styled here with a simple white top. Or maybe their blue culotte style trousers (£22.99), which look like denim, right? New Look’s pale pinstripe high waisted denim hotpants (£17.99) are 1970s-tastic, agreed? If you have the legs for them, get them on! Finally, we love GAP’s loose, slouchy, denim dungarees (£54.95).

Alternative denim bottomsDenim in top form is probably the one look in alternative denim that can be difficult to wear. Do we do double-denim?If not, what do you wear your denim top with? Faux leather we say! And yes, yes, yes, this year to double, and even triple, denim!

Replace a regular denim jacket with something a bit more tailored (and not strictly denim!). White Stuff’s blue collarless jacket (£75) has a denim feel, New Look’s kimono wrap style jacket (£22.99) would look great with dark denim culottes, and H&M’s stonewash and darkwash trim jacket (£34.99) is an quirky take on the regular.

alternative denim jacketsFor summer, your alternative denim wardrobe needs to include a dungaree pinafore dress (£44.95, GAP), okay? Or a really pale, gorgeous denim strappy dress like this one from New Look (£27.99).

alternative denim pinaforesDenim skirts can be 1970s or 1980s inspired. If it’s the 1970s look you are after, then go for A-line, maxi or midi. If it’s the 1980s you are channelling, then try a pencil skirt.

Finally, be a little quirky with your alternative denim style, and get some denim on your feet! We LOVE these denim Kickers, to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary. (£85, Schuh).
